New Year's vandals strike in Italy as statue of Pope John Paul is smashed

A manhunt has been launched after a statue of former pope John Paul II was damaged.

Vandals smashed off the head and hands of the statue in the resort town of Riccione on Italy's northern coast on New Year's Eve.

Police have now launched a manhunt for the culprits.

The incident was just one of many acts of violence that marred New Year celebrations throughout Italy.
