«Indignados», camped in St. Peters

The «indignados» from various nations manifested in St. Peter's Square, while one of them climbed the Christmas Tree near the obelisk.

The protesters pitched colored tents and distributed flyer-bulletins.  Some of the slogans being shouted were, «freedom», «No to violence», but also «Church is corrupt», «the Pope is a criminal» and «the Vatican must pay taxes like everyone».

One of the protesters who wore a tunic with the words «angry heart» also raised a billboard that said  «get up and walk».

A megaphone announced another rally of «indignados» in Piazza San Giovanni.

Police officers first monitored the situation and had the demonstrators move beyond the fence that surrounds the Christmas tree.

Then the Vatican security forces arrested at least two young Frenchmen, those arrested, included the boy who had initially climbed the tree to avoid arrest.

The indignados then started an assembly on the side of the square facing the Basilica and announced that they will not move from the place until their comrades are released.

In fact, they argued that protesting and climbing the tree is no more than an administrative offense to be settled with a fine and not with an arrest.
