Death of abusive cult leader could free many apostles

The pope is dead.

Will there be a new pope, and how will we even find out?

For 40 years, Jean-Gaston Tremblay - also known as Pope Gregory XVII and Jean-Grégoire de la Trinité - had been the spiritual leader of the Apostles of Infinite Love, a breakaway Catholic cult based in a "monastery" sequestered in the countryside near St. Jovite.

"There's a big fence around the community, but it wasn't clear whether that was to keep prying eyes out, or to keep people in," says Info-Cult's Mike Kropveld, who has been monitoring "les Apôtres de l'amour infini" for decades.

Tremblay was 83 when he died in a Ste. Agathe hospital on New Year's Eve.

For much of his life, Tremblay had been the target of police probes, arising from allegations of forcible detention, mental, sexual and physical abuse of children, illegal confinement and kidnapping.

One former member, who went on to file a $2.5-million civil suit, cited abuse ranging from sexual molestation, being locked in a closet and beaten with a garden hose to being kept out of school and refused contact with "the outside world."

Yet despite intense surveillance, Tremblay spent very little time behind bars.

The last criminal charges against him and other members of the sect were dropped in 2001.

The Crown said it was unable to go ahead because there were too many problems with evidence about the alleged abuse of seven boys and a girl.

And so, Tremblay retired to the sanctuary of the Laurentian compound, which had been founded in 1962 by his predecessor, Michel Collin, a defrocked Roman Catholic priest who had ordained himself Pope Clement XV.

Was justice serviced?

In an open letter sent to Kropveld, one former member condemns the failure of the federal and Quebec governments in allowing "totalitarian" sects with "narcissistic" leaders such as Tremblay to exist in the name of religious freedom.

"How could our governments allow children to be kept totally separate from society, their parents, brothers and sisters in the name of the group?" he asked. "We couldn't even complain to our parents because we were only allowed to see our parents a few times a year. Those who finally decided to leave the group take years to get over it. Some never get over it. Some committed suicide."

The former member said at least 14 former members of the group receive compensation from Quebec as victims of crime, a strange twist of logic when charges against Tremblay and his acolytes were dismissed.

"Over the years, I have spoken to a number of former members," said Rick Ross, who runs a New Jersey-based non-profit Internet archive that focuses on cults and controversial movements.

"The horrible treatment the children reported was torture. The group has long been considered a 'destructive cult' based upon its structure, dynamics and the harm it has done."

Kropveld is curious to see what becomes of what's left of this closed group now that Tremblay is gone. Numbers had already slipped from the heyday in the 1970s, when roughly 300 people belonged to the community.

Over the last six weeks, the group has also seen the death of its "mother superior," and her husband, who were among the first to move to the community in the 1960s. "Has the group been able to attract new blood to keep it going?" Kropveld asked.

"It's not clear whether Tremblay put someone in place to take over. If not, there could be a splintering between two people vying for control."

Kropveld said people raised within the confines of such a closed community are often conflicted because, until they leave, this is the only world, even the only "father," they know.

"My guess is some people will be happy to see him die," he said. "Most often when an authoritarian leader of a purported 'cult' dies, the group loses its focus, locus of power, and withers," Ross said in an email message from Australia.

"Given the history of this group and the many people hurt by its practices, my hope is that the death of Tremblay is the beginning of the end for the Apostles of infinite Love."

  1. I posted a comment on this b4. Why didn't you people show it? Was it because it goes against what you people say? Was it because I was telling the truth? That everything you people have said and are saying about him and the community are all lies, and that you will face God and his judgment bc of all these false accusations? I bet you won't even post this up. He was a great man who prayed for our sins and the salvation of all of our souls.

  2. this isn't a cult. i don't know where you people have gotten this information from but they are all lies. he has never abused any children or anyone in any way. all those people who have lied, made false accusations against him should be ashamed of themselves especially if they knew him. all of you who lied are a great disappointment to the community, and i hope that God will forgive you and won't judge you harshly because of this. He was a great man, a very virtuous man. he was a saint! he has helped many families and people. he has saved our soul and has taught us to love God with all our heart. He has also taught us to forgive those who harm us and who bare false witness just like what these people have written about him and the community. i HIGHLY recommend you check your references about this great man and the church because what you say about him and what you think about him is wrong. this isn't a cult, it is a church, a church of God. you judge him without knowing him, you judge the community without knowing them. how can you say such lies about such a great man, a man who hasn't done nor caused any harm to anyone. he is not a terrible man as you people portray him to be. let see if you post this up.

    2. To anonymous:

Well obviously you do not know what you are talking about.... Did you grow up there? Did your parents put you there under the age of 3-6 month or born there? How can you base yourself and say that all the facts that happend there are false? It's look's to me that you never lived there AS A BABY NOR AS AN INFANT NOR AS AN ADOLECENT ETHEIR and this cult in your view and not in reality has done anything rong. You are dead rong because there is no one perfect here on Earth. You say that gaston did help many family well let see what about all the family that got separeted from their parent brother and sister? Why the boys were living with the boy and the girls living with the girl? God has said do not separate what I reunided. Well what is the SACRENEBT of mariage mean to you when gaston had done exactly what God forbiden to do? Tell me if one human on Earth has the right to pretend to be more then God and worship like God...... Oh my do you realy beleive that he was a great man? please? He was an great manipulator, dictator and abuser. This statment of your's "a very virtuous man!!!!! and a "saint" well can you back it up? When did you see this so "vertuous man and saint pray? You never probebly did not see him because you where not there to witness it see this "great man" at 5:30 in morning time(because he was never there or if he was it was under rare occasion) saying the so called "office"? When did you saw this man praying wiht us all these "veille de Priere" that we whent trought for a good 30 years? Every pope and saint of the Catholic Church had a Director Spirituel that general public where aware of. Can you tell me the name of the director Sprituel de gaston? The awnser is NO BECAUSE TREMBLAY HAD ONLY A MONITOR SPIRITUEL. HE WAS TO PROUD OF HIMSELF AND DID REFUSE TO SUBMIT TO A DIRECTOR SPIRITUEL JUST LIKE HIS MONITOR BECAUSE THEY BOTH DID NOT WANTED TO OBEY. How can you beleive that he is a "saint"? You said "he tought you to forgive those who bare false witness", what about case were he was found guilty of contemp of court order to return children to their parent? He event said on radio "they want to force me to tell where are the children I am not a judas I will not denonce my people" I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TO CHECK YOUR REFERENCES AND TO RETRAC ALL OF THE ABOVE POST. You judge him a "saint, virtuous man" without knowing him, you judge this cult without knowing them. HOW CAN YOU SAY SUCH LIES ABOUT SUCH OF LIE AND BELIEVE YOUR OWN LIES?

    3. You know what? Like a wise priest told my father years ago:

When you stand too close to a painting, you only get to see some of the details, those that are right in front of your nose.

In order to appreciate the full picture, you must step back so that you can begin to see the whole. The painting is not complete unless you have stood back to appreciate how that section applies to the rest of the painting.

Over the past 40 years, I can name at least 73 different families who have had at least one of their siblings leave that cult and there are still more coming forward. Does the experience of over 200 people not count for something? It's not that small a minority when you consider that there are presently 200 to 500 so called faithfuls there now. God forbid we should all decide to go public with our experiences! I don't think the "Apostles" would stand much of a chance!

So do yourself a favor, step back and look at the history of this movement over the years. You will begin to see a whole new picture, instead of just that area you have had your nose glued to!

I may be just one voice right now. But as Ste Catherine de Sienne said: Oh! Enough silence! Scream with a million tongues. Through constant silence, the world has gone bad."

I pray many more will join me in "Breaking the silence"

    5. Thanks dear Brother\Sister for this beautiful testimony about Father John Trinity of the real Pope of the True Holy Catholic Church Gregory XVII. He was a great holy man an angel on earth chosen by God Himself. And for those who accusing him, may God forgive them and give them His light so they can see the truth and to stop blaspheming the Holy Ghost. This sin will not be forgiven as Jesus said.Who says the good is evil and evil is good, it is a very serious sin against the Holy Ghost. As when they have accused Jesus saying that his miracles were devilish source. Also Jesus said: No servant above His Lord, as they persecuted and accused HIM falsely, the same thing with Father John and His followers, we are His servants so it is normal that the world treating us like Our Master Our Lord Jesus Christ. So we can't give them light nor convince them unless God give them His light so they can see the truth. We only can say the truth, and pray for them. May God and His Most Holy Mother and Our Mother Bless you!! Vive Jesus Marie!!

  3. 1st of all, if you have actually been to this place you know that the entrance to the monastery is just a simple chain that is no more than 50cm above ground and that it is completely open. that even a child can climb over or even under it. those big fences that you talk about are the ones that are dividing the land between theirs and the other person's land who is adjacent to them. honestly you people need to get your facts right. and all those people who have said that they were tortured by him and the community where all lies and they know it. if you knew these people you would know that they are not evil, that they do not cause harm or "torture", "beat kids with a hoes". they do nothing of the sort. all they do is welcome you to their church, listen to your troubles and try to help you in any way possible. they teach you about God and answer any of your questions regarding religion or about your problems. that is what they do.

    2. I you trying to promote yourself to replace the dead pope? it sounds like you haven't even set foot at that evil place. I lived there for 22 years from the age of 3 starting in our own home, and then was moved there for another 19 years, My parents were lied to about we would be living as a family, do you think that happened??? were YOU there all those years? If yes then you would know what it was like to have to stuff your own mattress with straw, ate onions, turnips dry out bread with the mold removed and a beverage made out of burnt bread to give the impression it was coffee? Please tell me did You have to endure punishments at such an early age t get us used to preparing ourselves to become martyrs for the cause of this walking jackass? who took all from the trusting people who believed in this IMPOSTER? using your very own words a SAINT?
Can you actually tell us that been molested by the people responsible for us kids was appropriated? I can go on and on, and if you can actually admit to being subjected to all of what happens behind closed doors them maybe you SHOULD become their next SAINTLY POPE!

    3. Well mister know everything I am assruring you right mow that you want the common people to beleive that you know everythng about that place. In reality you do not know jack, you probably dont know that they were BARB WIRE ON TOP OF THE OUTSIDE OF THE FENCE. That resemble to a jail.... The city had to get involve in it and force them to put them down. The question I have for you here why do you need a fence when you own the whole place there? Yes the whole place from that church called st louis on the rang 7 all the way to the other end of bethleem belong to them!!!!!!! What separation do you need or mark the land when you own the whole thing and do not have no neighbor? All I have to say here is if you dont have nothing to hide or be affraid of and if you are sure that you are an organisation that do only "good" you do not need to isolate yourself and build up shuch wall of protection especialy if you are the owner of the said property? You are rong to say and to try to say that fence is a landmark, I think you should retract yourself and tell the truth for once. Even if there is a small chaine in front like you said a "kid could go under or over it". I garanties you that this chaine would not goes down for myself and many others that separated themselve from the movement and this place and are considered like judas traitor and bound to eternal salvation because we did not agree with them and we refute all forms of sexual mental and physical abuse that we receive from these so generous poeple and of that so persecuted "church".... ONCE AGAIN I AM ASKING YOU TO RETRACT YOURSELF AND TO VERIFY YOUR SOURCE AND DO NOT AND I MEAN DO NOT MAKE FALSE STATEMENT.

      Delete
  4. I am an ex-member of the apostles. You speak of fences around the entire property. You're absolutely right in saying that. But, don't forget the mental fences they build with their members. Those are barriers that are the most insurmountalbe to the members of that group. Forget that little chain at the gate, that is refered to as only being 50 cm above the ground. It may as well be a solid steel wall 100 miles high. They brain wash their members. It took me years to get over that brain washing. They tell you that you or your family will come by an aweful fate if you leave. Abuse? I was 12 years old and doing construction work. Don't tell me there was no abuse toward children there and most likely still is going on. And that is on the mild side. What about the ones who were sexually exploited by not only Gaston, but several of his minions. Many of the members know only what they were brain washed into thinking. The old saying comes to mind: "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do." It is so true. Many of the members are good religious people, but are misled by the "Gaston" philosophy. I feel so very sorry for them. I do hope that the organization folds. I only fear for the members who will be released into the public world without having a clue what to expect. And that will be especially bad for the elderly members of their society.

  5. In response to:
    ~ This isn't a cult ~

No, we will not be ashamed of ourselves for speaking our truths, nor shall we let him rest in peace until our voices have been heard. But do not worry about our forgiveness, God does not judge the innocent harshly. We have checked our references, and we bare no false witness. For we know that no liar will inherit the kingdom of God, neither will any deceiver. With that said, I suggest you start praying for his salvation, not ours.

  6. To this post I say: "AMEN AMEN AMEN" You have pound the nail at the right place. NO, WE WILL NEVER BE ASHAME OF OURSELF FOR BEEN A LIVING TESTIMY OF OUR TRUTH. This post give me hope that the truth will be expose and that all lies made up by gaston will be buried in hell. Our Lord said: "YOU WILL NOT USE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD IN VAIN" How many time did gaston profained the Name of God? Not to mention his suposed "messages and visions" where he vigilantly constantly hide his evilness cover up with "spirituel nurishment", invoking that "Jesus Himself" was the origine of his message and all this to keep control and monopole of his "kingdowm"? Yes, may God have mercy upon his soul. Like you said I suggest that you start praying for his salvation. You may pray for our healing also because we surely need all the help we can to keep forgive him as Our Lord told us to do in the "OUR FATHER"

  7. To the original poster: “Anonymous/”cult sympathizer,

I have lived in the cult, and have DIRECT experience with the “loving touch” of the hierarchy there. So, I don’t “judge him without knowing him.” I know full well the devastation he has caused – and we, who experienced that devastation, are not few; we are legion. We are not ashamed, and will not be MADE to feel shame – we are no longer afraid of the cult. I can think of nothing I would love BETTER than being “a great disappointment to the community!” Oh, the ego behind this statement! Do you really think any of us who were fortunate enough to escape STILL consider whether we should PLEASE “the community?!” Really?! To your comments: “he was a great man . . . a virtuous man . . . taught us to love God with all our heart . . . he has helped many families and people.” Yeah, right! He taught us to love HIM! He helped HIMSELF – to our families’ homes, money, children – he helped HIMSELF to our bodies and minds! Yes, indeed, what a “saint!” For over 50 years, he has used FEAR as a tool of control. Fear of himself, fear of his minions, fear of eternal damnation, fear of an ever-impending apocalypse. Last time I checked, the world was still spinning on its axis. PLEASE…he was no man of virtue. He was a drunk, bloated, self-important, narcissistic sociopath, and he has taught his flunkies his evil trade. I am not worried about “heavenly justice.” I am a good person who has lived a good and decent life. I experienced harsh treatment in the cult; I am neither delusional nor a liar. I’d like to assume you are also a good, decent person. I pray that you have the strength and opportunity to escape, as well.

  8. To that original post!
Pauvre ti'pitt. T'as une belle queue, t'as une belle queue, t'as une belle queue....

    1. You poor children, why and how do they get away with this for so many years? This is the most unforgivable sin, and offense: hurting children, and rape. They should have kept him in jail with his other abusers so the children can be safe! Who is in charge now? Are they abusers too? Maybe they were abused by him too?

    2. I lived there too, I was deceived from the start, they separated me from my siblings and mother... and this person you call a 'saint' tore families apart for the love of himself and sexual pleasures for him and his higher-up friends; men and women... So we were abandoned and left into the hands of strangers, we were at their mercy, I soon learned that I was "called" to be there, that God has chosen me and everyone there to become a religious, and we are the lucky ones, that we will be saved by giving up my family friends, home, worldly possessions and follow him..., and there was no choice, if we don't than we will go to hell. I lived continuously in guilt and fear. I do not wish this life on anyone. My family not there went to court to try to get us out and bring us home, but this person you call a "saint" hid us from the courts, this is an offense... Surviving in this type of environment is inexplicable... then after 10 years I finally found the courage to break away.
I hope I am alive to see the walls of this place fall down, then we can all celebrate and mourn with a quiet and profound sadness knowing how many lives were stolen, spirituality torn away, minds wasted, dignity lost, hearts closed up, and families destroyed...

To confirm another anonymous' statement on the vastness of their proprety, just go to http://maps.google.com/ and type in "Monastere Magnificat". OH MY GOSH!!!! They are their own neighbors!

According to two different sources, there are somewhere betwen 326 or 500 acres of land! With that much land mass, they surely should not have to worry, especially since they own the land on both sides of the main road!

Oh right! Never mind,.... We are all liars!!! I know your kind, you'll come back with: It's to keep their ennemies - ex-members and clergy people - out so they don't vandalise!

Ever hear of a pyromaniac? A fire brings sympathy, donations in goods and lots of cash! Heck, that fire of 1976 was a mother pay load! Yet, they could not spare a little jar of honey. They even requested - from people on social assistance - $5 in return for a box of food that had been given to them from Montreal markets! There was so much, they gave it away and fed their animals wth it. Furthermore, as children, we went begging too! I know my group of nuns brought in a good 800$ a day! That's without counting family allowance, old age pensions, and all the goods you had to give when you got there!

Where's the hospital they were to build 40 years ago? Where's the orphanage? I believe all the monies donated for those projects has been going into the purchase of more propreties. This gives them easier access to more places to go beg for even more cash! Check out my website for the details that bring me to this conclusion.

Yep, there are many sincere people there who also make good preachers but when you get down into the nitty gritty details of the inside operations, there are a lot of other issues!
