Economic turmoil for people visible to Redemptoristines through volume of prayer requests

Letters asking for prayers to help people through the financial woes and stress as the recession in Ireland continues are continuing to pile up at a Dublin city convent.

Just two weeks ago, the Redemptoristine sisters at Drumcondra in Dublin held a major vocations drive.

As a result of this, the public has been writing letters in their droves to the sisters asking them for their help.

People have also posted messages seeking prayers on the nun's website that has a specially dedicated section dealing with prayer requests, and on the sisters Facebook page.

Speaking about the prayer requests, Prioress of the convent Sr Gabrielle Fox explained that each day the sisters prayers are guided by the letters and emails that they receive.

She added that, although they are an enclosed order, many people join them for daily prayers via a internet television broadcast,

“We often get in excess of 200 people joining us on line for prayer each day.”

Because the nuns do not leave the convent, they invite people into visit them instead.

Therefore according to Sr Gabrielle, “we are acutely conscious of the issues such as unemployment, suicide, financial strife and emigration.”  She added, “We are all affected.”

Sr Gabrielle also stated that since the order launched its recent recruitment drive they, “had really grabbed the public's attention.”

“A lot of people have been writing looking for our prayers.  They are saying that it is a comfort for them to known that we will pray for them and that we are here to listen,” Sr Gabrielle said.
