Archbishop’s hope for new President of Ireland

The Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin & Glendalough, Primate of Ireland and Metropolitan has welcomed the election of Michael D. Higgins as President of Ireland.

In a statement last Saturday, the Archbishop said : The election of a new President is a significant day for the people of Ireland. Along with immense gratitude for the work done by President McAleese, there is also an air of expectancy surrounding the years of service which lie before our new President, Michael D. Higgins.

I wish Mr Higgins everything that is best in the years to come.

A President who stands alongside our people and identifies with our joys and sorrows, as well as presenting the best of Ireland internationally, is someone to whom people young and old across Ireland and beyond will warm with considerable affection.
