Mexico City lawmaker proposes mandatory prenups

Mexico's Roman Catholic Church is harshly criticizing a bill proposed by a Mexico City legislator to require all couples to sign a prenuptial agreement before they marry.

The contract would specify how custody and other issues are to be handled in case of divorce, but also specify how long the marriage is expected to last.

The proposal hopes to cut down on the lengthy divorce proceedings choking the city's courts, by making potential couples decide about monetary and custody issues by mutual agreement before they get married.

A spokesman for legislator Lizbeth Rosa said Friday that couples can agree to a term of 99 years, if they want.

A church spokesman says a "sell-by" date on such contracts would trivializes marriage.
