Pope visits L'Osservatore Romano, encourages staff

Pope Benedict XVI visited the editorial offices of L’Osservatore Romano on July 5, as the Vatican newspaper continues to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

The Pope thanked the editors and staff for their work, saying that the daily news coverage “helps the faithful to consider contemporary issues in the light of the Word of Christ and the magisterium of the Church, while remaining attentive to the signs of the times.”

The long history of L’Osservatore Romano is an important resource, the Pope said. But he mentioned that it must be accompanied by a steady willingness to accept new developments: “The memory of the past is fruitful only if it becomes an occasion to draw nourishment from deep roots, and to look to the future with hope.”
