Life rooted in brotherly love true remedy for humanity's wounds, says Pope

Humanity today, just like the "harassed and helpless," crowds which moved Jesus need a "rule of life" based on brotherly love, which has its source in God: this is "the true remedy to the wounds of humanity, be they material, such as hunger and injustice, or psychological and moral caused by a false well-being ".

This was the warning that Benedict XVI addressed last Sunday to 30 thousand people in St. Peter's Square for the Angelus.

The ccompassionate gaze of Jesus "seems to extend up to our time, to our world. Even today it rests on so many people burdened by difficult living conditions, but also without valid points of reference to find a meaning and goal to their existence”.

"Exhausted multitudes are found in the poorest countries, tried by poverty, and even in the richest countries there are so many dissatisfied men and women, even people with depression. Then we can also think of the many displaced persons and refugees, those who emigrate risking their lives. Christ's gaze alights on all these people, indeed, on each of these sons of the Father in heaven, and he repeats: 'Come unto me all of you ...' ".

"Jesus promises to give all 'rest', but sets a condition: Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart;. What is this 'yoke', that instead of weighing down, lightens, and instead of crushing, raises up? The 'yoke' of Christ is the law of love, is his commandment, which he bequeathed to his disciples (cf. Jn 13.34, 15.12). The true remedy for the wounds of humanity, be they material, such as hunger and injustice, or psychological and moral caused by a false well-being, is a rule of life based on love brotherly love, which has its source in God. This is why we must abandon the path of arrogance, violence used to obtain positions of greater power, to ensure success at any cost. We must also renounce our aggressive way of life towards the environment that has dominated in recent centuries and adopt a reasonable 'mildness'. But most of all in human, interpersonal, social relations, respect the rule of non-violence, that is the force of truth against every injustice, which can ensure a future worthy of man. "

The Pope, then, after the Angelus, invited everyone to "find comfort" in the words of Jesus during the holiday season which began this week, when the Pope announced he will travel to Castel Gandolfo.
