German Church May Give Victims 5,000 Euros, Sueddeutsche Says

Germany’s Roman Catholic Church plans to give victims of sexual abuse as much as 5,000 euros ($7,086) each in compensation, Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported today, citing unidentified people with knowledge of the plan.

In severe cases, the church may increase the maximum compensation and may also take over the cost of therapy for some victims, the newspaper reported.

So far, 579 people have applied for compensation from the church, Sueddeutsche Zeitung said.

  1. The amount of money that Germany's Roman Catholic Church has decided to give to the victims of sexual abuse by priests ($7,086 each) appears to be a very low amount of compensation.

I remember in the United States, when sexual abuse victims of priests were compensated by the Boston (Massachusetts) diocese several years ago, the amount per victim was around $50,000.
