Call for funeral industry reforms

The National Council of the Forum on End of Life in Ireland has recommended regulation of the funeral and cremation industry, “one of Ireland’s least-regulated businesses”.

It urged the establishment of an office for the regulation of funeral services which would regulate the industry, carry out regular inspection of facilities and ensure greater transparency in costs.

It proposed the office be financed by the industry.

The recommendations were made in a discussion document prepared under the chairmanship of Mrs Justice Catherine McGuinness.
