Boston church asks Vatican to stop its sale

Parishioners at a closed Roman Catholic church have asked the Vatican to stop the Boston Archdiocese’s attempts to sell the church building.

Parishioners at Boston’s Holy Trinity Church, recently listed for $2.3 million, made the request Monday to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Clergy.

They argue the archdiocese hasn’t completed a required process to convert the building to secular use.

The archdiocese didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The archdiocese has closed dozens of churches since a broad reconfiguration began in 2004.

Groups at seven other closed churches in the archdiocese have made requests identical to Holy Trinity’s.

In January, the Vatican upheld appeals by three Springfield parishioner groups, rejecting attempts to close their church buildings, but backing the decision to close their parishes, broader territorial entities.
