A FORMER convent and chapel in Clonmel is to be converted into a
multi-purpose community facility in an ambitious €500,000 project.
Funding has been approved by the Government for the renovation of Fr
Michael Burke House in the town, which is lying vacant but is set to
incorporate a number of community services.
The new space will incorporate a youth cafe, a centre for older people, meeting room facilities and room for the provision of essential services to a broad cross-section of the population.
The funding is being provided under the Government’s Rural Development Programme and was described by outgoing OPW minister of state Martin Mansergh, as “a major boost to the local community in Clonmel”.
“There has been a strong local push to secure funding for this development and now that it has been allocated we can look forward to a fantastic community facility being put in place,” he said.
“The premises were vacant and there is a lot of potential for their conversion. Once the work is complete the building will be far more beneficial to the people of Clonmel and give them an excellent resource right on their doorsteps.”
