Dalai Lama to visit Southill

SPIRITUAL leader the Dalai Lama is expected to visit Limerick during an Irish visit to appeal for peace in some of the troubled estates in the city.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent struggle to liberate Tibet.

The Dalai Lama has been invited to Ireland by a number of charities involved in helping children caught in conflict.

His Irish itinerary has not yet been finalised but, according to well-placed sources, it is believed he will visit Southill in Limerick.

Chairman of the Tibetan support group, Neil Steepman said: "The intention at the moment, and nothing has been finalised, is he will come to Limerick as part of that visit."

Since 1959, the Dalai Lama has received 84 honorary doctorates and international awards. He is the author of more than 72 books.

The Dalai Lama gives teachings throughout the year at various times and in different places. In India, his teachings and public talks attract huge numbers.

He has been giving teachings in India at the request of various Buddhists from Taiwan and Korea.
