Church destroyed abuse documents but kept summaries

Summaries of missing documents detailing sexual abuse within the Catholic church have been kept, church authorities said on Sunday.

On Saturday, the NRC Handelsblad and Dutch world service reported that the former bishop of the diocese of Den Bosch destroyed documentation on sex abuse cases in the 1970s and that another file from the 1990s is also missing.

A government commission is currently investigating the extent of sexual and physical abuse in Catholic institutions.
