Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, the prefect of the Congregation
for Divine Worship, discusses Pope Benedict’s drive to restore proper
reverence to the Eucharistic liturgy, in an interview with Andrea
Tornielli published by the Italian daily Il Giornale.
Cardinal Cañizares speaks about the problems created by an excessive
desire for experimentation, creativity, and rapid liturgical change in
the days after Vatican II.
He says that Pope Benedict wishes to
establish a more organic approach to liturgical reform, emphasizing the
continuity that unites old and new forms.
The Pope’s vision calls for a
revival of appreciation for beauty in worship—especially in sacred
music, featuring Gregorian chant—and for sacred silence.
