Cardinal Navarrete dies at 90

Cardinal Urbano Navarrete died Monday, at the age of 90.

A Jesuit priest and professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University for more than 2 decades before becoming Rector of the University in 1980, Fr. Navarrete was created Cardinal in the consistory of 2007.

Pope Benedict XVI sent a telegram of condolence today to the General of the Society of Jesus, Father Adolfo Nicholas, SJ.

In the telegram, the Pope celebrates the late Cardinal Navarrete as someone for whom he always nurtured profound esteem, both for his life of Christian witness as a man of religion, and for his exemplary service as a teacher who formed several generations of Christians and especially of priests.

A Funeral Mass was said for Cardinal Navarrete in St. Peter’s Basilica yesterday (Wednesday) November 24th, at 11:30 AM Rome Time.
