Worshippers get wristbands for Pope

Wristbands will be given out as passes when the Pope celebrates Mass in Glasgow.

Church officials have confirmed they will be given to worshippers the day before the event in Bellahouston Park next week.

It had been expected so-called Pilgrim Packs would be delivered in advance and would contain the bands.

But organisers have confirmed they will now send passes to the nominated leaders for distribution the night before on the advice of the police.

Letters have also been sent to leaders giving first details of how to get to the park on September 16, with thousands now expected to use the Subway.

The latest details come after it was revealed one in four passes for the Mass had not been allocated, with 75,000 due to attend, 25,000 short of capacity.

Some worshippers are known to have been put off by the £20 donation requested for a pass, but deadlines have been extended, with Catholic leaders claiming the charge is not mandatory.

Meawhile, centuries-old vestments from Scotland have been unveiled ahead of a viewing by the Pope.

The two garments were worn by Cardinal John Henry Newman, who will be beatified by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Britain next week.

The Cardinal gifted the ornate vestments to Abbotsford House, in the Borders, following stays at the property in 1852 and 1872.

The vestments are being loaned by the Abbotsford Trust to the Archdiocese of Edinburgh for the Pope to see on his visit to the capital.
