The top of Croagh Patrick was the unusual scene for Mayo bride Georgina Byrne and her Australian husband Greg Fletcher. The couple had to climb 762m to tie the knot in the tiny oratory.
Describing it as "the most memorable moment in my life,” Ms Byrne from Brickens, Claremorris, said that when her fiancé suggested it, she did not know if it was possible to organise.
"I just didn't know how we were going to do it all, but after a few phones calls, we heard that couples had done it before so that put us at ease a little," she explained.
"We both have climbed the mountain a number of times and it is a very special place for the both of us.”
“Climbing the mountain was one of the first things Greg did when he came to Ireland."
Ms Byrne said that having decided to host the wedding on Croagh Patrick, everyone was “very supportive and so helpful." She said that after having her hair and make-up done, she had to don hiking gear.
“We carried the dress up and I got changed in a small room off the church,” she explained.
Some thirty guests and officiating priest Fr Micheál Mannion joined the couple for the ceremony and were told they could wear whatever they wanted.
"We had so many well wishers who stopped to talk to us on the way up- it was so special”.
"We were nervous about the weather but the sun came out and we were both so relieved."
After the ceremony, the newly-weds were joined by friends and family at a reception in the Mill Times Hotel in Westport and are to live in Perth in Australia.
