Catholic Bishop Unaware of Predecessor’s Past

Last night the Catholic Bishop of Iceland, Pétur Bürcher, issued a statement declaring that he was unaware of the allegations directed at his predecessor.

Jóhannes Gijsen, the former Catholic Bishop in Reykjavík from 1995-2007, has been accused of sexually harassing boys in his home country of Holland, as reported by the Dutch media yesterday.

According to Bürcher, the Catholic Church regards the matter seriously, hoping the case will be thoroughly investigated and that justice will be fulfilled.

Gijsen, now 78 years old, denies the accusations.
