Moyross monks organise rapping contest

The huge work that the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in Moyross in Limerick City do continues unabated over the coming weeks when they will host a rapping contest for local teenagers at Delmage Park Friary in County Limerick.

Speaking this week, Brother Shawn Comer claimed that the contest, which will be known as Stars In The Hood is open to, “any kids on this estate.”

He added, “The winner will get a cash prize and the chance to record their track.”

He said rap is a way of reaching them on their level and doing something they can get excited about.

“It's also a way to promote the positive and keep the kids occupied.”

Event organiser and local Youth worker Jamie Daly from Moyross, who works closely with the monks, said that the contest, which will take place on Sunday August 8, “will help stop young kids in the area from ruining their futures.”

He added that, “To date we have more than 20 acts lined up and for most of them it'll be their first time on stage. The monks will perform a rap too they are great guts and will have a band for their performance.”

Brother Shawn who has lived in Moyross for the past three years says that the key to the monks being able to do such activities in the area is the fact that they live in Moyross.

“In the past six months especially we have gained the trust of locals. They see us here helping as part of the community. We're not ignoring the bad, we're focusing on the positive and pointing people in the right direction.”
