Same-sex adoption harmful to children, Australian bishop argues

An Australian bishop has explained that the Church’s opposition to adoption by same-sex couples is based on concern for the children’s welfare.

Bishop Julian Porteous, an auxiliary of the Sydney archdiocese, pointed out that governments traditionally “have acknowledged and supported the general proposition that a child’s best interest is served when that child is raised by a mother and a father.”

He referred to the 2003 Vatican statement on the issue, which said that “the absence of sexual complementarity in [same-sex] unions creates obstacles in the normal development of children.’

“Adoption cannot be about satisfying adult desires to be a parent,” the bishop argues.
