Priest vows to continue to speak out on evils of drugs

A Dublin based parish priest has vowed to keep speaking out on the evils of drugs even though he was threatened during a recent funeral ceremony.

Ballyfermot parish priest Fr Seamus Ryan (73) spoke out on the evils of drugs at the recent funeral of two crime brother figures when a member of the congregation shouted abuse at him.

However speaking this week, the Limerick born priest who was a lecturer at the former seminary Saint Patrick's College in Thurles, insisted that people need to stand up in the fight against drugs.

He added, “It did occur to me there could be some trouble for me, however, I've always spoken out against drugs.”

At the funeral at Saint Michael’s Church Fr Ryan told mourners that they needed to question how those from good parents, “can easily be lured on by the big bucks in the drug trade” before speaking of the rise of drug related deaths in the area.

It was then a female relative of the brothers confronted him at the altar saying, “I told you not to mention drugs.”

However Fr Ryan is adamant that despite fears for his personal safety he will continue to speak out on the evils of drug abuse.
