The Benemerenti Medal was instituted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832 and is conferred on those who have exhibited long and exceptional service to the Catholic Church, their families and Community.In 1925, the concept of awarding this medal as a mark of recognition to persons in service of The Church both civil and military, lay and clergy alike, became acceptable.
On Sunday June 27th 2010, P. J. Clarkson, along with two others, was awarded this medal for dedicated service to the Church of St. Theresa, Mount Merrion, Dublin.
In making the award, Fr. Tony Coote, administrator of the Church said "Mr Clarkson was a founding member of the parish council and chairman of the finance committee.
He took charge of the day to day management of the church finances. He has been active in this role for thirty five years".
P,J. .grew up in Mullingar. He was the son of Robert Clarkson, Garda Siochana, and his wife Henrietta. They Lived in Church Avenue.
He was educated in St. Finian's College and left there in 1946. His brothers are Fr. Eugene, John Joe, Fr. Bill (deceased) and one sister, Sister Angela. P. J., together with his wife Crona, live in South County Dublin.
They have four children; Kevin, Conor, Helen and Michael.
