Miracle at Knock claim sent to Vatican

Medical evidence is being gathered in an attempt to prove a miracle occurred at Knock shrine in Mayo, it has been reported.

Marian Carroll, now aged 59, claims she was cured of multiple sclerosis after a visit to the shrine almost 20 years ago.

Mrs Carroll has written an autobiography I Was Cured at Knock, in which she describes her miraculous recovery from the degenerative condition that left her unable to walk, blind in one eye and without the control of her bladder.

She claims she lived with the symptoms of MS for 17 years, although it was never officially diagnosed.

At the age of 38 she was stretchered to Mass at the basilica in Knock, in the west of Ireland, and afterwards was able to get up and walk.

The shrine is a major Catholic pilgrimage site in the village where it is claimed there was an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Joseph, St John the Evangelist and Jesus Christ in 1879.

Diarmuid Murray, a GP who runs a practice in the shrine grounds, is gathering evidence to present the case to the Vatican for approval.
