Book offers speculation on who will be next pope

Anura Guruge has become quite interested in anything about the papacy.

"The Next Pope: After Pope Benedict XVI" WOWNH LLC, $29.65), his second book related to the Roman Catholic papacy, offers speculations about the next papal election, whether it happens sometime soon or in many years.

Guruge presents his top 10 possible candidates for the papacy.

This top 10, of course, changes as time goes on. Guruge has set up a website at www.popes-and-papacy.com to keep this book up-to-date.

Caricatures are provided by Matt Kirkland of the possible leading candidates for the papacy.

Guruge provides a history of who has elected the previous popes. He presents Pope John Paul II's rules on how to elect a pope and other rules that preceded those.

He explores the background of previous popes, including those who were members of religious orders, who were Italian, who were of the nobility and other topics of note.

Guruge has several black and white illustrations throughout the book.

He gives information on how a papal election is conducted, the various names of previous popes and several charts and tables showing a variety of facts and trivia.

This will be of interest to scholars and general readers.

This book is a must for those interested in anything about the papacy.
