Second cathedral for Korean archdiocese

The building of a second cathedral and a synod on evangelization are some of the activities that Korea’s Daegu archdiocese has planned to mark its 100th anniversary next year.

The archdiocese recently launched a competition inviting architects to come up with designs for the new Beomeo Cathedral, ucanews.com reports.

Apart from being a religious venue, the cathedral will also function as a cultural complex, said Auxiliary Bishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil.

The date for judging of entries is Sept. 17.

The new cathedral is expected to be completed in 2014 with a construction budget of some 30.7 billion won (US$26 million).

The present cathedral is Kyesan Church in Daegu.

The archdiocese also plans to hold a synod on evangelization among the youth and in present-day society.

The meeting will also discuss Church life at the parish, district and archdiocesan levels.

A book on the archdiocese’s history will also be launched.

Daegu archdiocese was established in 1962, decades after the then apostolic vicariate of Korea was divided into the apostolic vicariates of Seoul and Daegu (Taegu) in 1911.

It had 154 parishes, 461 priests and 450,826 parishioners, according to 2009 statistics.
