Popular Capuchin priest dies

A County Donegal Capuchin priest who survived an horrific car crash in 2008 passed away last weekend.

Well known and highly respected Fr Mark Coyle OFM Cap, passed away peacefully at the Ards Friary in Creeslough on Friday June 11 last.

The former Guardians life changed dramatically after a road traffic accident in September 2008 when his car collided with a bus just outside Creeslough.

With serious neck, chest and arm injuries among others, he was gravely ill and spent a long time in a Dublin hospital. Fortunately, he improved and was able to return home.

The popular Letterkenny man was one of the best-known faces in the iconic friary and was much missed among the local Ards and wider community after the crash.

He returned to the Donegal Friary in 2009 and helped celebrate mass on a number of occasions with the aid of an electric wheelchair.

He stepped down as Guardian in the summer of 2009 and was replaced by Fr Donal Sweeney.

It is believed that his health began to deteriorate again recently.

He was buried in the Ards Friary Cemetery at the weekend.
