Pope quip offends victims of clamping in Colchester

A CLAMPING company involved in a parking dispute has responded to a letter from an MP by asking who will get involved next – the Pope?

Shaun Newman, 28, and Sarah Pretlove, 29, turned to Colchester MP Bob Russell for help following the incident in March after visiting friends in Rotary Way, Colchester.

They were among a number of visitors to the housing development who were ticketed by Impact Security Services.

Parking used to be allowed on one side of the road and not the other and the couple felt the restrictions were inadequately signposted.

Having paid £125 plus VAT and a credit card and administration fee to have the car released, the couple wrote to Mr Russell seeking help in their fight against the charges.

The firm’s managing director has written to Mr Russell saying: “I have had the Gazette involved (full page), letters from the managing director of the management company and now letters from the House of Commons! Let’s hope his holiness Pope Benedict is busy this week!”

The parking restrictions have now been changed and Mr Newman said: “As my girlfriend is a Catholic, she did not find the comment very tasteful. The fact the restrictions have now been lifted shows it was wrong in the first place.

“We would like to continue to fight it, but to be honest I am not sure we will as we are scared of ending up with a massive bill for costs.

“This response, especially to the town’s MP, just shows what contempt these people seem to have. They just don’t care.”

Mr Russell said the letter from the company was not particularly helpful.
