Mexican legislator demands probe for coverup against Legionaries of Christ

A legislator with Mexico's main leftist party has filed a criminal complaint against a conservative Roman Catholic religious order.

Leticia Quezada Contreras wants Mexican prosecutors to investigate allegations of a coverup of sexual abuses.

The Legionaries of Christ denies any wrongdoing in a statement but said it would co-operate with authorities if needed.

The Vatican has assumed leadership of the order after revelations that its founder sexually abused seminarians and fathered at least one child.

Abuse victims of Marcial Maciel say the Vatican didn't go far enough in acknowledging responsibility.

Maciel's most prominent accuser has called for an independent inquiry into the broader church's actions in the case.
