Church rejects court order to allow remarriage for Egypt's Copts

The Coptic church rejected a court order to allow Egyptian Christians remarry, local media quoted the Coptic Pope as saying on Monday.

"We are only committed to the teachings of the Bible," al-Shorouk daily quoted Pope Shenuda III as saying.

On Saturday, the High Administrative Court rejected an appeal by the Pope Shenuda of Alexandria to prevent Copts from remarrying, saying that the constitution "guarantees a Christian's rights to have a family".

During his sermon late Sunday in the coastal city of Alexandria, the pope warned that those who marry "against church teachings" will not be allowed to enter the church again.

In 2008, a court ruled that Copts who had a civil divorce had the legal right to remarry.

According to government figures, Christians account for roughly 10 per cent of Egypt's population.

In the Coptic church, divorce is only permitted in cases of adultery or conversion to another religion or sects of Christianity.
