State Funding for Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church

A Kerry church dedicated to the founder of Catholic Emancipation in Ireland has been granted funding under a Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government scheme.

The Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church in Caherciveen in County Kerry, which is currently undergoing a €6 million restoration, has been awarded €15,310 under the civic structures conservation grants scheme announced by Minister John Gormley.

The landmark church is the only conservation project in Kerry to receive funds under this year’s scheme.

In total, the minister announced grant offers totalling €1.38 million for conservation works to 86 properties around the country. The scheme will ensure the continued preservation of heritage structures, such as churches, libraries, harbours and gate lodges, which are in civic ownership or occupation and open to the public to enjoy.

Minister John Gormley said he was pleased to be in a position to show continued support in 2010 for the particular grant scheme which he claims will have direct benefits for the local communities involved.

“I commend the local community-based organisations for their excellent work in preserving their local heritage and as such am delighted to be able to support them in their endeavours," the minister commented.

“I would also encourage other communities to identify and promote conservation projects in their areas," Minister Gormley added.

The Caherciveen church restoration is being spearheaded by Canon William Crean and significant donations have already been received locally, from throughout Ireland and from abroad.
