Maciel was a schizophrenic, says Mexican Cardinal

Mexican Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iniguez, who may be appointed to reform the Legion of Christ, said the group's founder Father Marcial Maciel suffered from mental illness.

In a recent interview on Mexican radio, Cardinal Sandoval said he deplored the "criminal" conduct of Maciel and that "nobody approves" of what the priest did, the Catholic News Agency reports.

His opinion was that Maciel was a "schizophrenic with a very well-defined double personality".

Vatican analyst Sandro Magister has said that the Cardinal was a possible candidate to assume the reins of the Legion of Christ.

Asked about being appointed apostolic commissioner for the troubled order, the prelate said he would prefer not to have the post, but would accept it if asked by the Pope.
