Gardai called to Cavan communion ceremony

A Cavan parish priest has described as unfortunate an altercation between two members of the travelling community at a communion service in the town last week.

The altercation, which involved two women, resulted in Gardaí being called to the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim to break up the row and supervise the religious service.

Speaking to his local Anglo-Celt newspaper Fr Patrick McGoohan described the whole incident as unfortunate and claimed that, while there were no further incidents, "The whole incident was a terribly upsetting one for both the children and the parents when they arrived in the church."

Fifty children from St Clare's NS, Gael Scoil Bhreigne and one Polish pupil from the Cavan No. 1 School were receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion.

“The whole incident put a damper on the early part of the proceedings.”

Despite the setback, Fr McGoohan was able to continue with the communion ceremony.

He claimed that “as of yet there has been no apology from either of the warring factions.”

A Garda spokesperson also confirmed that “an altercation between two females had occurred at Cavan cathedral but that no arrests had been made.”
