Archbishop blesses Dutch flowers

Despite the turbulent times in which the Roman Catholic Church is being accused of covering up sexual abuse of children, Archbishop of Utrecht Wim Eijk has found the time to bless the flowers which will be brought to Vatican City for the traditional Easter mass next Sunday.

The bishop said he hoped the daffodils, tulips and lilies would have a good journey and would arrive safely.

It is the twentyfifth time the Netherlands sends flowers for the decoration of St. Peter's Square. In total, over 22,000 flowers and 1500 garden plants are donated this year.

During the Mass in Rome on Easter Sunday the Netherlands is traditionally thanked by the Pope 'for the flowers'.
