3 Italian journalists say Burke and Dolan to be cardinals

Three Vatican journalists - in separate reports - all say St. Louis native - Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York -- appears to be on the papal short list for being named a Cardinal next time around.

In an interview with WABC TV in New York City, Archbishop Dolan says he's not holding his breath - because New York already has a Cardinal under the age of 80 who could vote for a new pope should the need arise.

"I would doubt it that it would come now," said Archbishop Dolan.

"And I am fine with that, both out of immense respect for Cardinal Edward Egan because he's a great Cardinal. He's still the Cardinal of New York. And that fact that it gives me a little more time to get my feet on the ground here."

Archbishop Dolan says with the title of Cardinal comes many new duties, including many trips to the Vatican for meetings.

"Is it probably going to happen, yes. I'm not going to sit here with false humility and say no," said the Archbishop.

"Will I be disappointed if at the next consistory I didn't get it? I would not be disappointed because I know it is the practice of the Holy See to respect the fact that it is rare to have two Cardinal electors from the same diocese."

The three Vatican correspondents, in separate reports, also said St. Louis Archbishop Emeritus Raymond Burke will almost certainly be made a Cardinal due to his role as chief justice of the Vatican Supreme Court when the pope makes his choices - rumored to be November 20th or 21st of this year.
