Retired priest faces indecent assault charges

A retired Windsor, Ont., Roman Catholic priest has been charged with two counts of indecent assault dating back to 1963.

The Chatham-Kent police major crime unit arrested 83-year-old Piotr Sanczenko on Saturday, when he turned himself in.

Two men told police of a variety of incidents they allege took place at Our Lady of Victory Church in Chatham between 1963 and '73.

The first man is reported to have gone to police in November 2009.

The second alleged victim was found during the police investigation.

The men were both under age 12 at the time of the alleged assaults, according to police, who are not providing further details to protect the identity of the victims.

Police have released the former priest, who is due in court on May 4.

They said they want to ensure there are no other victims, and are asking anyone with more information to contact them.

Sanczenko served at a variety of parishes in southwestern Ontario between 1954 and 2003.

He has been living in Windsor since retiring.
