One of the country’s oldest serving priests dies

One of the oldest priests still actively working in parish ministry anywhere in the country passed away aged 98 years.

Canon William Noonan had served in the parish of Templemore in the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly a parish he had worked in for 35 years.

Canon Noonan was born in the South Tipperary village of Cloneen in 1912 and was ordained in Saint Patricks College, Maynooth in 1937.

He served as curate in Moyne Templetuothy (1937-39), Drom & Inch (1939 to 1941) and in the cathedral in Thurles from 1948 to 1964.

He became parish priest of Ballingarry in 1964 and ten years later he was appointed parish priest of Templemore where he served until 1987 when he became associate pastor in the parish, a role he served in until his passing on March 13 last.

A keen historian Canon Noonan also had a passion for set dancing and was a regular set dancer in clubs for dancing in both Templemore and nearby Thurles.

After Requiem Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Templemore, Canon Noonan was buried in the adjoining cemetery.
