Germany to toughen law to prevent child abuse

Germany says it will impose stricter rules on educators in reaction to the country's spiraling child abuse scandal in schools, including many linked to the Roman Catholic Church.

Families Minister Kristina Schroeder told the Wiesbadener Kurier daily Wednesday that local authorities will be allowed to ask for a thorough police check on all applicants who are going to work with kids.

Schroeder also said she will propose a comprehensive action plan this fall to better protect children, including from the Internet.

Over 170 former German students of have recently come forward with claims of sexual abuse at boarding schools decades ago.

Schroeder said some perpetrators of sexual abuse are known to seek out such jobs to be near children.
