Aborigines recognised by Catholic Church

The Catholic Church in Tasmania has for the first time recognised the state's Aboriginal community as the traditional owners of church land.

Archbishop Adrian Doyle unveiled a plaque at Hobart's St Mary's Cathedral this morning, to recognise Aborigines as the traditional owners of the cathedral grounds.

The Archbishop says today's ceremony was a first.

"It is but I'm hoping it's not the last," the Archbishop said.

"I'd like really that something similar be done at the entrance to all our churches."

Aboriginal elder Eva Richardson says it is an important step towards reconciliation.

"People don't realise with reconciliation that we are all doing it every day in our lives, you're doing it at this moment, we're all doing it as our journey of life, so it's a part and parcel of our lives as we journey through life."
