Polish Pope: Santo, not quite Subito

John Paul II will not be beatified on the 17 October, a date which had previously been speculated by media.

A Vatican press release issued today confirms that the late Polish Pontiff will not be canonised on that date, instead listing six other indiviuals.

Pope Benedict XVI is to canonise six new blesseds on 17 October, including Stanislaw Soltys Kazimierczyk, a 15th century Cracovian priest.

The date of the 17 October was never officially announced by the Vatican.

The postulator in charge of John Paul II’s beatification process, Fr. Slawomir Oder, repeatedly told media that it is still too early to lay down a definite date.

The date of 17 October is an important one in the history of Pope John Paul II, as it is the day after which Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected Pontiff, the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Perhaps more pertinently to the late Pope’s teachings of inter-faith dialogue, this year the 17 October would have coincided with a special bishops’ synod on the Middle East.
