Bishop disappointed at negative reaction to summit

The Bishop of Down and Dromore John McAreavy has said he is disappointed to hear that victims of clerical sex abuse think the summit in Rome this week was "nothing but a cynical PR exercise".

The Country's 24 bishops were summoned to Rome earlier this week following the publication of the Ryan and Murphy reports.

The Vatican released a statement following the two-day summit, condemning the child abuse as a "heinous crime" but stopped short of apologising for what happened.

Bishop McAreavy said he has "no doubt that the Pope will at some stage meet with those who were abused at the hands of the Church here".
