Wexford parish embraces Facebook phenomenon

A Catholic church in County Wexford has embraced the Facebook phenomenon by establishing its own page.

Fr John Carroll (43), the curate of Barntown parish in the Diocese of Ferns administers the Facebook page, which, as it represents the life of a rural parish church, is one of the first of its kind in the country.

The recently established page currently shows that Barntown Church has almost 250 fans with the online congregation growing steadily as the word spreads.

It also contains information on the local church telling us that the church was designed by the famous architect Augustus Welby Pugin.

The page says, “This site is a meeting place to exchange news and greetings for parishioners and friends past and present of St Alphonsus church.”

Among its recent posts was an online invitation to parishioners to attend the annual tradition of gathering to ring the bell at the church to mark the New Year.

The site is also used for discussion and Fr Carroll regularly tells people about his work on a typical day.

A number of well-wishers have also posted messages of congratulations to the parish for becoming part of the Facebook phenomenon and reaching out to younger parishioners.
