Visitor saves Killarney church

A popular wedding church overlooking the lakes of Killarney was saved from destruction or serious damage by the lucky visit of a parishioner on Sunday evening.

At about 6pm, a parishioner who dropped in to the entrance hall to collect a leaflet noticed that the interior of the Prince of Peace Church at Fossa had filled with smoke.

The church, which was built in the 1970s, draws hundreds of wedding couples from all over Ireland.

A number of units of the fire service were called to the scene, along with parishioners.

The origin of the smoke was later located in a faulty electrical circuit serving stained-glass panels.

The interior of the church suffered smoke damage.
