Nova Scotia woman files lawsuit against Roman Catholic Church for alleged sexual abuse

A woman has filed a lawsuit against a Roman Catholic diocese in Nova Scotia, claiming she suffered years of sexual abuse by a priest.

Linda Deschamp, who lives in Halifax, alleges in her suit that Rev. Raoul Deveau began abusing her in Shelburne when she was about 10 years old.

In a statement of claim filed with the province's Supreme Court on Dec. 24, Deschamp alleges that a 10-year cycle of sexual assault started in the early 1970s after Deveau hired her as a housekeeper and she moved in.

Deschamp's lawyer, John McKiggan, alleges that the parish priest - who died in the early 1980s - made the young girl call him uncle and tell people she was his niece.

The suit, which is seeking unspecified damages, names the diocese of Yarmouth and the archbishop of the diocese of Halifax.

None of the allegations has been proven in court. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
