Martin respects Madden's decision

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin says he accepts and respects the decision of clerical sex abuse victim Andrew Madden to formally leave the Catholic Church.

The Archbishop said Mr Madden's trust was betrayed by a priest and anyone can see where that would lead.

Archbishop Martin was speaking at an ecumenical event in Trinity College this morning.

He said he wished Mr Madden every success and blessing in life and that he did not try to dissuade him from leaving.

However, he said he did write to Mr Madden when he initially applied to leave.

Mr Madden was one of the first people to go public about the abuse he suffered.

He was an altar boy when he was abused in Cabra in Dublin by Fr Ivan Payne.
