Dublin priest shocked at discovery of bomb on church grounds

A Dublin based priest got a rude awaking this week when Gardaí pounded on his door looking for the keys to the parish church because a bomb had been lobbed onto its grounds.

Canon John Flaherty from the parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Drimnagh, Dublin, described the drama that took place early in the morning.

"It appears it had been thrown at a house and when they saw it on their doorstep they threw it into the church grounds.”

Fr Flaherty, who only moved to the parish last month, said he could not blame the person for throwing the device into the church yard. He added, “There is a big grassy area there and the most sensible thing to do if you found a bomb on your doorstep is to get it as far away from your home as possible.”

He added, "It was very frightening but thank God, nobody was hurt in the incident.”

Local Gardaí in Drimnagh have confirmed that they are continuing to investigate the incident.

The Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin recently appointed Canon John Flaherty as Moderator of the Team Ministry of Crumlin, Clogher Road and Mourne Road parishes.

He is Parish Pastor of Mourne Road Parish since December 1 2009.
