Carlow Monsignor condemns graveyard thefts

A County Carlow parish priest has this week condemned thefts that have taken place at a cemetery in the county.

A statue of Padre Pio is just one of the items that have been stolen from graves at St Patrick’s Cemetery in Tullow in recent weeks.

The thefts have angered not only the families who care for their loved ones’ graves, but also the local parish priest Monsignor Brendan Byrne.

Speaking to the Carlow Nationalist newspaper and KCLR-FM he claimed, “The statue of Padre Pio that was stolen was brought over from Italy and had been securely placed on the grave by the family. It is unbelievable to think that people would do that.”

According to the priest, the statue disappeared overnight and is one of many items that have disappeared from the cemetery in recent months.

Disappointed that vandals would perpetrate such acts, Mgr Byrne said, “Maybe they are stealing them to sell on – I don’t know – but I would ask whoever is doing this to stop.”

The Tullow parish priest is also encouraging members of the public to report any suspicious activity in St Patrick’s Cemetery to the local Gardaí.
