Dublin Archdiocese receives several defection requests

A spokesperson for the Dublin Archdiocese has confirmed that it has received 40 letters in the past week from people requesting to formally defect from the Catholic Church.

The requests follow the publication of the Murphy Report into child abuse in the archdiocese.

It has been reported that, in recent weeks, record numbers of Catholics have been inquiring about the necessary documentation required to sever ties with the Church.

However, the spokesperson stated that, to date, a total of 200 Catholics have contacted the office this year asking to defect from their religion.

Latest statistics show that there are currently just over one million Catholics registered within the Archdiocese of Dublin.
