Pre-signed Mass cards being withdrawn

Mass cards signed by a priest in Africa are being recalled by their Irish distributor.

According to Tom Rogers of Vellum Gold Ltd, a distributor of Irish handmade greetings cards based in Clones, Co. Monaghan, the company is contacting retailers across the country in order to remove the cards bearing the signature of Fr Joseph Nzelu of the Diocese of Kitui in Kenya.

Under instructions from the bishop of Kitui, Fr Nzelu sent an email to Vellum Gold in September asking them to ''cancel the selling of Mass cards bearing my name''.

However, Mr Rogers said that the company had not received this email, but they contacted Fr Nzelu by text message and he confirmed that he was withdrawing from their arrangement.

''Mass cards were never a big part of our business and we will not be selling them anymore,'' Mr Rogers said. ''They had always left a bad taste in the mouth.''

According to Mr Rogers Vellum Gold will continue to send their own donations to Kenya to fund Fr Nzelu's educational programmes, which help people to attend third level education.
