Irish-born priest is the new chaplain to the British Houses of Parliament

Canon Pat Browne, who is 61 and parish priest at Pimlico in London, was appointed following requests from members of the Palace of Westminster for a priest to be available for pastoral care.

Announcing the appointment, Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster, said he was, “very grateful for the assistance of the Speaker John Bercow and the Speaker’s Chaplain, Canon Robert Wright, for their co-operation in arranging the appointment.

Canon Browne will be available not to MPs and Peers but also to the many Catholics who work in the Palace of Westminster,” the archbishop said.

A native of Ratoath, Co Meath, Canon Browne is the eldest of seven and studied for the priesthood at the Jesuit Apostolic School at Mungret College in Limerick and All Hallows College in Dublin and also studied singing at the College of Music in Dublin.

He was ordained in 1974 for the diocese of Westminster and appointed assistant priest at St Edmund’s Parish, Edmonton and subsequently Westminster Cathedral.

In 1985 Canon Browne became private secretary to the late Cardinal Basil Hume and in 1990, he was appointed parish priest of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Kentish Town.

Eight years later, he became the diocese’s vocations director and promoter and for the past eight years, has been parish priest of Holy Apostles parish in Pimlico.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor appointed him a member of the Westminster Cathedral Chapter of Canons in October 2004.
